Overview
The Machame Route is the perfect balance of scenery, challenge, and summit success. It winds through tropical rainforest, moorlands, and glaciers — offering a rewarding and varied landscape at every stage. This is Kilimanjaro’s most climbed route, and for good reason.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Moshi Arrival
Arrival, gear check, and overnight stay at the base town.
Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3,000m)
Start through dense forest. Look for colobus monkeys.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,850m)
Steep climb with wide-open moorland views.
Day 4: Shira to Lava Tower (4,630m), down to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Acclimatization hike – climb high, sleep low.
Day 5: Barranco to Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Climb the Barranco Wall. Rest early for summit night.
Day 6: Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), descend to Mweka Camp
Midnight summit push, sunrise on Africa’s roof.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Gate – Transfer to Hotel
